tankI have good news to report today. Martial law will not be imposed on the U.S. during George Bush’s term! This fear has been at the heart of most liberals (particularly those who escaped to Canada) since 9/11. The passage of the Continuity of Government directive, which states that, in the event of national emergency, the executive branch will dissolve the legislative and judicial branch, does little to allay this fear.

However, there is only one battalion of soldiers (that’s 3,500 trained riflemen) with which to initiate martial law. I suppose the Bush Administration could technically deputize gun loving rednecks to do the job, but the odds are that they lack the collective strategic intelligence necessary.
I think we are off the hook until someone sane takes over. I think the neo-conservatives will not get their desired wars in Iran, Syria, Lebanon or Pakistan. Hurray!

  1. Funny you should mention that, lately I’ve been of two minds about how excited I *really* am to “bring the troops home.”

To be honest, lately I’ve found the choice of words in that phrase to be a little frightening. I’d kinda like to bring the sons and daughters, husbands and wives home… not necessarily the TROOPS.
